Scholarships

Scholarship opportunities have been made available through numerous benefactors of the Lock Haven University Physician Assistant Program. We thank these benefactors and the LHU Foundation for providing assistance to PA students as they strive to become healthcare providers in medically underserved areas of the Commonwealth.
Dr. Victoria Romeo Memorial Scholarship
In 2008 Lock Haven University Foundation became the benefactors of a trust that has endowed scholarship opportunities to graduate physician assistant students and LHUP undergraduate 3+2 BS/MHS students. This endowed scholarship fund will provide the following scholarships to future physician assistants enrolled in the LHUP programs:
· Four ~ $3,000.00 Scholarships annually to students enrolled in the graduate Physician Assistant Program
· Six ~ $2,000.00 Scholarships annually to students enrolled in the undergraduate 3 + 2 BS/MHS Program
These scholarships will be competitively awarded on an annual basis. Students who receive the award in previous years are eligible to compete in subsequent years for the award. The following criteria will be used for determining award recipients:
· Students must be residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to be eligible for the award
· Incoming 3 + 2 students, who apply prior to their freshman year for scholarships during their first year at LHUP, must have attained a minimum of 1100 combined math and verbal scores on SAT.
· Students applying in their freshman through junior years in the 3 + 2 Program or graduate PA students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA.
· Awards will be preferentially given to students who are from medically underserved areas.
· Financial need, as determined by the student FAFSA application, will be considered in determining award eligibility.
· Academic Performance as demonstrated by the applicants last 24 months of education in any setting and standardized test scores will be considered.
· As part of the application, an essay that addresses both how the student will work towards meeting the mission of the Lock Haven University PA Program, and their economic need will submitted. (maximum of 300 words)

2. Submit a digital copy of their essay to Lori Beers, PA Program Secretary at
lbeers@lhup.edu with a subject line of Romeo scholarship.
3. Obtain two letters of recommendation that address the following characteristics:
a. Interpersonal skills
b. Demonstrated academic performance
c. Reliability
d. Potential for underserved practice
e. Committments to service and civic engagement
Deadline for submitting Scholarship applications is March 15th of each year. The applications will be reviewed by the Physician Assistant Program Scholarship Committee.
Eleanor Baieroski Harendza Scholarship
Amount ~$1500.00
Eligibility: Students enrolled in the didactic phase (first year) of the graduate physician assistant program
Criteria for selection:
- Demonstration of financial need
- Desire for practice in Rural Primary Care
- Place of origin/significant life experience in a medically underserved community
- Lock Haven University Physician Assistant student matriculated in the didactic phase of the program.
- Review of financial need by University Financial Aid Office

300 word essay, typed in 12 pitch double spaced format and submitted to the committee by March 15th of each calendar year. The Harendza scholarship will be judged by the Physician Assistant Program Scholarship Committee.
Applications will be reviewed as to place of origin and/or significant life experience in a medically underserved community. An emphasis will be placed on those students originating from/residing in medically underserved areas.
Dr. Larry H Lytle & Lynn J Lytle Scholarship
Amount ~$500.00
Eligibility: Students enrolled in the Clinical phase (second year) of the graduate physicain assistant program
Criteria for selection:
- Demonstration of financial need
- Desire for practice in Rural Primary Care
- Place of origin/significant life experience in a medically underserved community
- Lock Haven University Physician Assistant student matriculated in the clinical phase (second year) of training
- Review of financial need by University Financial Aid Office

Dr. Michael Greenberg Scholarship
Amount: ~$300.00
Criteria for selection:
- The Michael Greenberg scholarship will be awarded to the second year PA student who, in the opinion of the PA Program faculty, demonstrates the highest standards of academic and professional excellence.
All applicants must submit a completed application for scholarship award along with their essays to Ms. Lori Beers, PA Program Secretary, by 12:00 PM on March 15th

SEMPA (Society for Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants)
Criteria:
- The applicant must be enrolled in a Physician Assistant Program, which must be either accredited or eligible for accreditation.
- The Scholarship is awarded to students in their senior year of training.
- Completed applications must be postmarked by December 31. The awards will be given in February each year.
- One of the following must be met:
- Applicant must have had previous experience in some aspect of Emergency Medicine and be interested in pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine. This experience includes, but is not limited to, working as a Paramedic, EMT, ER tech, Search and Rescue, Independent Duty Corpsman, ED Nurse or Orderly. Experience working in remote or rural site that handled emergencies routinely, would also be acceptable.
- Applicant demonstrated an interest in and a pursuit of Emergency Medicine by their didactic and clinical rotations that are pertinent to Emergency Medicine. This interest must be verified by a faculty member.

Award winner is provided payment for Tuition, Fees, a monthly stipend and other reasonable expenses.
In Exchange the program participant agrees to provide service to some of the United States underserved populaitons.
